Stuart A. Sklar is a shareholder at Fabian, Sklar & King, P.C., where he has litigated hundreds of fire and explosion cases and collected millions of dollars on behalf of his clients—including a $21 million settlement for the children of a couple who were killed in a propane gas explosion.
He is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), and a principal member of the National Fire Protection Association Technical Committee on Fire Investigations—the only attorney on the committee representing policyholders and those injured or killed in fires and explosions. The committee is responsible for NFPA 921: Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations. He has been active in the development of every edition of NFPA 921 since 2001. Stuart is also a principal member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire Investigator Professional Qualifications responsible for NFPA 1033: Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator.
As an industry leader in fire and explosion investigation, Stuart co‐founded the International Symposium on Fire and Investigation Science and Technology (ISFI), a biennial professional symposium designed to bring together international fire investigation professionals to present and discuss the latest in fire investigation science, research, technology and methodology. He has given expert testimony on fire scene investigation methodologies and has testified before a subcommittee of the Michigan Legislature on pending insurance legislation. Stuart has also lectured extensively on fire and explosion litigation issues throughout the United States, Canada and England.
Stuart is regularly called upon to provide training to investigators and attorneys on fire litigation issues and to organizations such as the United States Justice Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Insurance Committee on Arson Control, the National Association of Fire Investigators, the International Association of Arson Investigators, the Detroit Fire Department Arson Section, and many others.
In October 2012, NAFI presented Stuart with its “Distinguished Service Award.” Stuart is the first attorney in the more than 50-year history of NAFI to win this award. NAFI selected Stuart based upon his “decades of unswerving and selfless dedication and exceptional service toward the advancement of the fire investigation profession, by promoting and providing excellence in the training, education quality, expertise and professionalism of our vocation.”
Additionally, Stuart has been selected as a Michigan “Super Lawyer” by Super Lawyers magazine every year since 2006.
